Yuki plays piano. Her favorite film is Spirited Away by Studio Ghibli. She has seen it twelve times.

One day, Yuki visits Mexico with her family. She goes to a market in Oaxaca. There, she meets a girl named Sofia. Sofia helps her find cucumbers. They become friends.

Now Yuki wants to practice her English. She writes to Sofia every week.

From Edo to Tokyo

Tokyo is the capital city of Japan. It is a very big city. About 14 million people live there.

Long ago, Tokyo had a different name. It was called Edo. Edo was a small fishing village. Then it became a big city.

In 1868, the Emperor moved to Edo. He changed the name to Tokyo. "Tokyo" means "Eastern Capital."

In 1923, a very big earthquake hit Tokyo. Many buildings fell down. Many people died. The people of Tokyo were sad. But they built their city again.

In 1964, Tokyo held the Olympic Games. The whole world watched. Tokyo showed the world a new, modern Japan.

Today, Tokyo is one of the most modern cities in the world. It has tall buildings, fast trains, and bright lights. But it also has old temples and quiet gardens.

Yuki loves her city. "Tokyo has everything," she says. "Old and new. Quiet and loud. It never stops surprising me."
